The Firewise Communities/USA Recognition Program is a process that empowers neighbors to work together in reducing their wildfire risk. Join the growing network of more than 1,028 recognized Firewise communities taking action and ownership in preparing and protecting their homes against the threat of wildfire.

Scientific research has shown the effectiveness and benefits of implementing wildfire mitigation concepts across individual property boundaries and throughout communities.

The following steps will get your community started and on their way to receiving their official Firewise Communities USA recognition status, and the honor of proudly displaying their own high-profile signage along with many other benefits.

  1. Form a Firewise board or committee.
  2. Obtain a wildfire risk assessment for your neighborhood or community.  The assessment is a written document outlining hazards and risk related to wildfires where you live.  This will be prepared by your Firewise committee in cooperation with your local fire department and FIRESafe MARIN.  You will create an action plan based on the assessment.
  3. Conduct a “Firewise Day” event (education events, work party, chipper day, etc).
  4. Invest a minimum of $2 per capita in local Firewise actions for the year.
  5. Submit an application to your state Firewise liaison.  FIRESafe MARIN will help!
