Marin IJ Public Affairs Show Spotlights Wildfire Danger

Marin Independent Journal

Wildfire experts agree that it’s not a question of if, but when a major wildfire will torch Marin County’s hillsides. The debate centers on whether Marin is doing all it can to prepare for the inevitable firestorm.

That’s the issue to be discussed from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24 in a live session of IJ Forums, the newspaper’s public affairs program hosted by IJ political columnist Dick Spotswood.

The session, which is open to the public, will be at Corte Madera Town Hall, 300 Tamalpais Drive and will be taped by the Community Media Center of Marin. The show will be posted later on marinij.com and will be shown several times on television (dates and times to be announced).

Panelists will include Marin Supervisor Katie Rice; Todd Lando, a wildfire expert and coordinator of Fire Safe Marin; and Ray Moritz, an arborist and fire ecology specialist who believes the county could do more to prevent wildfire.

Spotswood will lead a roundtable discussion for a portion of the show and audience members will have a chance to pose questions directly to the panel.

The session is the second IJ Forums show in which Marin residents are invited to participate; a session in Mill Valley in October focused on traffic in Southern Marin. Previous IJ Forums shows were taped in the studio.

“This continues our effort to shine a light on important local issues and involve the community,” said Editor Robert Sterling. “We encourage people to come out Wednesday, but if you can’t make it the program will be available for viewing later, thanks to our partnership with the Community Media Center of Marin.
