Home Evaluation Tip

Plastic garbage and recycling containers may be vulnerable to ignition from embers. Consider relocating at least 5′ from any structure or attachment, and always ensure lids are tightly closed.

Did you know that plastic garbage containers are combustible?

There is a large amount of petroleum required to produce the plastic involved in making a garbage or recycling container. Petroleum is extremely flammable and increases the container’s vulnerability to the ignition from embers, or ashes.

What do I do about it?

Relocate garbage cans outside of 5 feet from a home, and/or 5 feet from any attachments, such as wooden fences. Make sure that the lids are tightly closed.
