Alert Marin is NOT NIXLE! Do not assume that you are registered for Alert Marin just because you receive “Nixle” notices from your local police department or school district!
Get alerted about emergencies and other important community news by signing up for Marin’s ONLY Emergency Alert Program. Alert Marin enables us to provide you with critical information quickly in a variety of situations, such as wildfires, severe weather, flooding, earthquakes, missing persons, and evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods.
In Marin, the “Alert Marin” notification system is used by all fire and law enforcement agencies to make emergency and evacuation notifications. You must register your phone(s) and address at www.alertmarin.org.You will receive time-sensitive messages for any locations you specify, such as your home, mobile or business phones, email address, text messages and more. You pick where, you pick how.
NEW – Alert Marin registrants can send a test notification to ensure the system works properly!
Log in to your Alert Marin account to verify your contact information and send a test alert.
Please be sure to enter the Alert Marin contact numbers in your smartphone (415-473-6376 and 893-61) and configure this contact to use your phone’s “Emergency Bypass” mode to allow ringing even when your phone is set to silent (iOS set ringtone to “Emergency Bypass”; Android phones may vary by phone manufacturer – start here).
Will you notify me every time a fire is burning nearby?
It’s important to understand that you will NOT receive routine notifications whenever the fire department responds to a fire in your neighborhood. Alert Marin is NOT intended as a general public information source. For general fire information on local fires, monitor Nixle, social media (especially Twitter and Facebook) and local news and radio! The Alert Marin system will normally be used only when there is threat or need for evacuation or to send critical information to a specific geographic area.
In most cases, firefighters are able to quickly extinguish fires without the need for evacuations, so alert messages will not be sent for every fire! Please understand that it takes time for firefighters to evaluate situations and compile accurate information – notices will be sent out immediately to affected residents when it’s determined to be appropriate and when accurate information is available. As with all emergencies, Marin residents will need to monitor OTHER public information channels for information.
Nixle and Twitter, as well as local tv and radio, are also good sources for local information, but are NOT the official evacuation notification system in Marin. Do not rely exclusively on these alternate sources for evacuation information – register for Alert Marin TODAY!
Evacuation preparedness requires more than just signing up for alerts!
