In July 2025, Marin Wildfire, in partnership with Fire Safe Marin, contracted with a team of science experts to update Marin County’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). The purpose of a CWPP is to provide a science-based assessment of wildfire hazards and threats to homes in the wildland urban interface of Marin. The CWPP will be developed through a collaborative process involving the project team, Marin fire agencies, county officials, county, state, and federal land management agencies, and community members.

Requirements for the development of the CWPPInfrared maps of Marin county

The requirements are set by the 2003 Federal Healthy Forests Restoration Act 2, which includes:

  • Engaging stakeholders and the public through a series of public meetings.
  • Identifying and prioritizing areas for vegetation management activities.
  • Addressing issues related to defensible space and the potential for structures to ignite.

Goal of the CWPP

The updated CWPP will integrate existing mitigation projects and address emerging risks, with a focus on ensuring dynamic tracking of mitigation progress. The goal is to inform future work plans starting in 2026 and to foster a collaborative, community-wide approach to wildfire risk reduction. The team’s collective experience includes the development of the 2016 and 2020 Marin CWPPs and key contributions to Marin Wildfire’s innovative data-driven approach to adaptive management.

Our team is committed to engaging local stakeholders, including fire agencies, government entities, community members and residents, to ensure the CWPP is comprehensive and addresses the concerns of the community. With a collaborative process in place, the CWPP will prioritize high-risk areas for immediate attention while laying the groundwork for future improvements in wildfire preparedness and resilience. The project kicked off in July and is planned to be completed by May 2026.

Future Community Engagement

Along the way, we will be conducting a series of community meetings as well as updates on progress. The team is dedicated to ensuring that Marin County will have a dynamic, scientifically rigorous, data-driven, and community-informed plan to reduce wildfire risk and enhance overall resilience.

Funding for this project is provided by Measure C. For more information on the CWPP, please contact Marin Wildfire.
