May is a Hot Month

On May 2, 2026, Marin’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) will be presented to the public at the Wildfire Preparedness Public Forum. The same day marks the nationwide Day of Action in support of the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Wildfire Community Preparedness Day. The combination of the Public Form, the unveiling of the CWPP, and the Day of Action kicks off the National Wildfire Awareness Month, an annual tentpole for wildfire safety public awareness highlighted by fire agencies across America.

What is the CWPP?

The Community Wildfire Protection Plan, developed by Marin Wildfire in collaboration with local fire agencies, is a countywide planning document developed to help Marin better understand wildfire risk and identify where coordinated action can have the greatest impact.

The CWPP helps show where wildfire risk is greatest and how wildfire may behave in different parts of Marin. The plan identifies where homes, neighborhoods, and infrastructure may be most vulnerable, and where prevention work and evacuation planning are most effective and critical.

Just as importantly, the CWPP helps guide action. It supports coordinated action across Marin by helping local agencies, fire departments, and community partners better understand wildfire risk, prioritize resources and the specific efforts that will protect lives, as well as strengthening preparedness measures and long-term resilience.

The CWPP is not just about identifying risk. It is about helping Marin turn planning into action.

Marin’s Wildfire Preparedness Public Forum on May 2

On Saturday, May 2, residents are invited to take attend Marin’s Wildfire Preparedness Public Forum, a countywide event focused on wildfire risk, preparedness, and action in Marin.

The CWPP will be officially presented to the public at the Forum. The event will provide an opportunity for residents to understand the CWPP, learn from fire safety experts, ask questions of wildfire industry leaders, and learn about the wildfire resilience efforts already underway across Marin.

The program will include presentations on the new CWPP and Marin’s wildfire preparedness efforts, followed by a panel discussion and public Q&A session with topic experts. Attendees will also be able to explore various information stations covering vegetation management, evacuation planning, detection and alerting, residential risk reduction resources, defensible space and fire-smart landscaping best practices, and much more.

The event is intended to help residents connect the larger planning effort with practical information and resources they can use right away at home and in their neighborhoods.

The Day of Action, May 2

In addition to the public forum, May 2 will also serve as a broader Day of Action as part of the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day. Across the country, agencies, nonprofits, fire departments, and preparedness partners are encouraging residents to take meaningful steps before peak fire season arrives.

In Marin, that effort will focus on promoting Chipper Day signups, encouraging residents to take that one simple, practical step to help reduce wildfire risk around the home. Also, Chipper Days give residents a clear next step and helps connect countywide planning with neighborhood-level participation.

Through their resident networks and at the Public Forum, local fire agencies will be promoting Chipper Day signups on the Day of Action. To give an outreach boost, Fire Safe Marin will help drive the Day of Action through Marin’s strong Firewise network, which includes over 60,000 residents across 90 communities in the county. Firewise leaders and neighborhood networks play an important role in sharing preparedness information, building local momentum, and helping turn awareness into action. Our local fire departments are excited to see what that creates on the Day of Action.

Wildfire Awareness Month in Marin

May 2 is only the beginning.

May is National Wildfire Awareness Month, and Fire Safe Marin is collaborating with local fire agencies to provide key wildfire safety messaging across a variety of platforms to reach all areas of Marin.

With support from Marin County Fire Department and County Office of Emergency Management, this outreach will focus on clear, useful information related to alerts, evacuation readiness, household preparedness, neighborhood coordination, and everyday wildfire risk reduction resources that are accessible to all residents, regardless of property ownership or economic status. Whether someone owns a home, rents, lives in a multi-unit property, or has limited means to make physical improvements to their living space, there are still meaningful steps they can take to be better prepared.

This effort reflects an important message: wildfire preparedness is for everyone.

Why This Matters

Wildfire preparedness is strongest when planning, public awareness, and practical action work together.

Marin’s CWPP provides the county’s roadmap, setting the direction for a shared future in wildfire protection. The Wildfire Preparedness Public Forum gives residents an opportunity to learn about the CWPP and engage directly with the wildfire experts that developed it. Coinciding with the Day of Action on May 2, the awareness can turn into immediate participation through Chipper Day signups and neighborhood communication. Together, these efforts help strengthen preparedness across Marin and build a more resilient future for all of us.

Funding for Fire Safe Marin’s participation in the CWPP project was provided by a grant from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection as part of the California Climate Investments Program, through the California Fire Safe Council.

Funding for the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) Update Project comes from Measure C funds through Marin Wildfire.
