Tickets Still Available! The Camp Fire Documentary: Benefit Screening May 14


You’re invited to join Fire Safe Marin for a Benefit Screening of The Camp Fire Documentary screening May 14, 2019, 6:30PM at CineArts Sequoia Theater in Mill Valley. All funds raised will support survivors of the Camp Fire and Fire Safe Marin’s goat grazing program.

Fire Safe Marin presents The Camp Fire Documentary, which tells a small part of the story one county experienced during its darkest day. The Camp Fire Documentary is a powerful and moving first person account from individuals and First Responders that battled the inferno that struck Concow, Paradise, Magalia and Chico in Butte County California on November 8, 2018. This documentary was produced by local filmmaker Nancy Hamilton who compiled a substantial portion of her film from people’s cell phone footage of the catastrophic fire.

The 50 minute film will include an introduction by the filmmaker, and a panel discussion will follow including: the Camp Fire’s Deputy Incident Commander; Camp Fire survivors, Stephen Murray, a 31-year resident of Paradise, and a father of two young children, who single-handedly rescued more than 60 senior citizens from a burning mobile home community; and local wildfire experts and leaders.

All funds raised will be distributed to charities supporting Camp Fire survivors, and to support Fire Safe Marin’s fledgling goat grazing program to reduce wildfire hazards in Marin.

Tickets are $50 – all proceeds will be split between Camp Fire Survivors and Fire Safe Marin’s Community Wildfire Reduction Goat Grazing Program.  Discounted tickets are available:

Discussion Moderator – Ron Vidal
Ron manages a consulting practice in the areas of strategy, capital markets, mergers & acquisitions, financial communications, public policy and crisis management for publicly traded and privately held telecommunications, data center and technology clients. Ron led Level 3 Communications relief and recovery efforts in New York City after the 9/11 World Trade Center terrorist attack, including restoring services to nearly every financial services firm, telecommunications network and governmental agency via its 1 million square feet of data center/colocation space and metro, long haul and transatlantic fiber optic networks. Ron is a volunteer firefighter, EMT and Chair of the Emergency Preparedness Commission in Mill Valley, California and a technical peer reviewer for FEMA grant programs.

Mark Brown, Deputy Fire Chief, Marin County Fire Department
Chief Brown served as the Deputy Incident Commander during the Camp Fire incident in November 2018.   Deputy Chief Brown has worked in the fire service since 1986, and with Marin County Fire Department since 1991.  As Deputy Chief, his duties include commanding the emergency operations of the Fire Department which includes fire suppression, training, emergency medical services, communications, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergency responses.  Mark has a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Studies from Brandman University.  He is married and he and his wife have three adult boys.

Mark was a founding member of the Marin County Urban Search and Rescue Team, California Regional Task Force 1 and has functioned as a Rescue Squad Leader, Rescue Manager, Water Rescue Team Manager, Task Force Leader and he is currently a Sponsoring Agency Chief.

Mark is a Type I Operations Section Chief on Cal Fire Incident Management Team 4.  He is also one of the Incident Commanders of the North Bay Incident Management Team, a Type III All-Hazards Incident Management Team.  Mark is one of the Advanced All-Hazards Incident Management Course Curriculum Development Cadre members and instructor.  He is the current chair of the FIRESCOPE US&R Specialists Group and the former chair of the California Regional Task Force Leaders Working Group.

Jim Wickham, Mayor, City of Mill Valley
Jim Wickham is Mayor of Mill Valley, and has served on the City Council since 2015. Jim has served on numerous community boards including the Mill Valley Emergency Preparedness Commission, Mill Valley Soccer Club (Board President), MV Little League, Tam High School Boosters (Board President), and the Board of the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival. He is a past member of the Mill Valley Lions Club and Mill Valley Rotary Club. Jim retired from the Mill Valley Police Department as Police Captain in December 2010 after 37 years of public service. In 2012, he became the Police Chief of Nevada City and in 2014 took a position as Public Safety Specialist for Pacific Gas & Electric for the north coast counties.

Alan E. Piombo Jr., Chief of Police, City of Mill Valley
Piombo’s law enforcement career started with the City of San Rafael in 1991 where rose through the ranks and served for ten years as a lieutenant. He holds an AS degree from Santa Rosa Junior College, a Bachelor of Arts in Management and a Master of Arts in Leadership from Saint Mary’s College of California in Moraga.  Chief Piombo is a native of the North Bay, having been raised and attended local schools in Cotati.  He now resides in Rohnert Park with his wife Gretchen and their five children.

Richard Shortall, President, Fire Safe Marin
Richard Shortall is a retired San Francisco Fire Department Assistant Deputy Chief. He has also served as the SFFD EMS Chief, Deputy Director of the San Francisco Office of Emergency Services and General Manager of the Bay Area SUASI Homeland Security Program. Rich is currently a member of the Board of the Ross Valley Fire Department and serves as President of the Sleepy Hollow Fire Protection District Board of Directors. He joined Fire Safe Marin as a Director in 2015 and currently resides in San Anselmo with his wife Diana.

Todd Lando, Executive Coordinator, Fire Safe Marin
Todd is a Marin native and has worked 28 years in the fire service, including 19 years as a wildland and municipal firefighter.  He studied Forestry and Wildfire Management at the University of Montana, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Urban Planning from Sonoma State University.  He is the Wildfire Hazard and Vegetation management Specialist for Kentfield Fire District and Central Marin Fire Department.  He has worked as a fire inspector, an urban forester specializing in community wildfire protection, and served as Executive Director of Fire Safe San Mateo County, the nation’s first Fire Safe Council. Todd is an NFPA Certified Wildfire Mitigation Specialist.  Todd lives in west Marin.
